Protect All of the Access Points of Your Home

Security is unfortunately something that many home owners do not think about until either they or someone they know becomes the victim of a home invasion. Home security is not a topic that should be ignored until something actually happens. The importance of home security is a topic which all home owners should make sure they understand in order to avoid becoming the next victim on burglar's long list of targets.

One of the most important things that should be understood about home security is the different ways in which a burglar attempts to access a home. Sadly, many home invasions actually occur while the home owner is at home. Such brazen home invasions and burglaries can be frightening and dangerous. Estimates indicate that home owners have a one in six change of being the victim of a burglary.

The number one access point for most burglaries and home invasions is right through the front door. This may surprise most homeowners, but burglars have found that the front door is often the best place for them to gain access to a home. 34% of all home invasions occur through the front door, so it is important to make sure the front door is secured with a dead bolt, strong framed door and a home security alarm.

The next most likely access point for home invasions are windows on the first floor. Quite surprisingly, many burglars find that gaining access to a home can be easier than they thought through windows that are unlocked. You can protect your home by locking your windows and using sensors on the windows connected to your home security system.

Running a close third is the back door on a home. Burglars tend to kick in back doors when they want to gain access to a home because the back door typically offers more privacy as a result of shrubbery and fences as well as the fact that it is often easier to break the lock on a back door. Protect your home by installing a secure back door and lock and making sure it is connected to your home security system as well.

The garage is another possible access point or burglars as well. This commonly occurs when home owners forget to close their garage door. Make sure that you always close your garage door and that your garage door is set up for your home security system.

The incidence of burglars gaining access through the basement is relatively low, but it is important to keep in mind that it is a possibility. Make sure you do not neglect this area when adding a home security system to your home, just in case.

Finally, make sure that any storage areas or any other entrances that provide access to your home are firmly secured. Remember that it only takes a few seconds for a burglar to gain access to your home but it could take years to recover from the horror of becoming the victim of a home invasion or burglary.
